The Story Behind the Stroke
How a childhood obsession with Henna evolved into a global movement of mindful creation.
I Was Twelve the First Time I Held a Henna Cone It wasn’t mine. It belonged to a didi in our neighbourhood who could draw Mehndi freehand, without a stencil, without hesitation. I watched her for hours — then practiced on rough paper, scrap fabric, my own hands. I wasn’t good at first. But obsession, given enough time, becomes skill.
The Question That Changed Everything For over a decade, I owned that craft. But something quietly bothered me: why should this beauty only last a few days?
Henna fades — that’s its nature. The technique didn’t have to. In 2013, I swapped Mehndi paste for high-pigment acrylics, and skin for wood, canvas, and glass. The same cone technique, on a hard surface, became raised, tactile, permanent art — Jharokha geometry, mandala symmetry, the glow of glass painting, now living on canvases, wood, mugs, walls.
How KalaZen Was Born My Instagram community grew fast. I ran online and offline workshops, watched hundreds of people fall for this art form — and knew it was time to build something real.
Alongside that pull was another, quieter force: becoming a mother. In 2021, the moment I held my son, something shifted. If I can raise a baby, I can build something from what I actually love. A business of my own. A way to save for my children’s future, and to show every mother watching that this is still possible. Right before my second baby arrived, KalaZen was born.
Where It Really Started It began in 2022, with an eight-month-old in my lap and ten minutes a day that were entirely mine. I’d shoot the moment sunlight hit my table, then paint through his afternoon nap — camera set the night before, surface ready. Fifteen, twenty minutes, most days. I’d edit that evening, or the next nap, or whenever the week allowed.
I shared it all on @the_chai_ladyyy. Within months, over 10,000 people had found the page — recreating designs, tagging finished pieces, asking to learn. Underneath the excitement was something else: relief. For many, that one hour with a Jharokha was the only hour in their week that felt entirely their own.
That’s when I understood what we were really building — not just DIY art kits for adults, but a reason to slow down. A deliberate break from the speed of everyday life.
I launched KalaZen in September 2025 with one intention: a heritage-rooted creative experience that fits inside one afternoon, and stays on your wall for years.
